Soupy Sales is gone, and so is my childhood
Soupy Sales was a comedian that was part of my childhood One funny thing I remember about him was that he was able to mix childhood humor with a little adult humor in good taste, so that he was able to pull it off very well.
Sales died Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher. Sales had many health problems and entered the hospice last week, Usher said. At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and ’60s, Sales was one of the best-known faces in the nation, Usher said. “If President Eisenhower would have walked down the street, no one would have recognized him as much as Soupy,” Usher said. At the same time, Sales retained an openness to fans that turned every restaurant meal into an endless autograph-signing session, Usher said. “He was just good to people,” said Usher, a former jazz music producer who managed Sales in the 1950s and now owns Detroit-based Marine Pollution Control.
Soupy was 83.

I had forgotten all about him. So sorry for the loss of another hallmark of a simpler time. He gave lots of giggles when I was little too.

Oh I know what you mean. He was more my very early adult hood so I could really appreciate his insanity.

Soupy always seemed like an all around nice guy.

The great thing about him was that he was able to entertain both kids and their parents together.

I do not remember exact shows he was in, but I remember watching him on certain game shows (I think it was game shows) and just thinking, again, how nice he seemed. And he was one of those comedians who did not need vulgarity to be universally funny.

Nemo I keep reading about this, he was obviously very important to lots of people but I’ve never heard of him, always sad to see the end of an era.

Loretta, he was not internationally known at the time. He was mostly known in New York where he had his kids show everyday
