Poetry: In Memoriam A. H. H.

Laura's Blogs Posted on May 4, 2015 by LauraJanuary 27, 2022

In Memoriam A. H. H. OBIIT MDCCCXXXIII: 27 By Alfred, Lord Tennyson I envy not in any moods… The captive void of noble rage, The linnet born within the cage, That never knew the summer woods: I envy not the beast that takes His license in the field of time, Unfetter’d by the sense of crime, To whom a conscience never wakes; Nor, what may count itself as blest, The heart that never plighted troth But stagnates in the weeds of sloth; Nor any want-begotten … Continue reading →

Poetry: The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 1, 2014 by LauraApril 15, 2016

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay … Continue reading →

Poetry: There is a Pleasure in the Pathless Woods

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 23, 2014 by LauraSeptember 23, 2014

There is a Pleasure in the Pathless Woods by Lord Byron There is a pleasure in the pathless woods; There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more, From these our interviews, in which I steal From all I may be, or have been before, To mingle with the Universe, and feel What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal.   … Continue reading →

Poetry: Warning by Jenny Joseph

Laura's Blogs Posted on June 11, 2013 by LauraSeptember 6, 2014

Warning by Jenny Joseph When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall … Continue reading →

Poetry: The Peace of Wild Things

Laura's Blogs Posted on March 5, 2013 by LauraJanuary 24, 2022

The Peace Of Wild Things by Wendell Berry When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And … Continue reading →

Poetry: Love by Jalaluddin Rumi

Laura's Blogs Posted on December 26, 2012 by LauraDecember 26, 2012

Love by Jalaluddin Rumi Are you fleeing from Love because of a single humiliation? What do you know of Love except the name? Love has a hundred forms of pride and disdain, and is gained by a hundred means of persuasion. Since Love is loyal, it purchases one who is loyal: it has no interest in a disloyal companion. The human being resembles a tree; its root is a covenant with God: that root must be cherished with all one’s might. A weak covenant is … Continue reading →

Cats Took Over My House By Sans Souci ©11/7/05 Cats took over my house! I never sleep; they tickle my feet. Cats took over my house! Cats took over my house! The couch I mourn; the leather is torn Cats took over my house!  Cats took over my house! They run and they zoom by the light of the moon. Cats took over my house!   Cats took over my house! There’s never a day they don’t want to play. Cats took over my house! … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 07/16/08: If You Had Wings

Laura's Blogs Posted on December 3, 2012 by LauraDecember 3, 2012

Sponsored by Eastern Airlines, If You Had Wings was one of the few free attractions in the Magic Kingdom, located in Tomorrowland of Disney World.   It opened on June 5, 1972.  Guest boarded Omnimover cars that showed different destinations that Eastern flew to.   In the days when most rides required the expenditure of prepaid tickets, this attraction was complimentary. Little publicized and little known, waiting lines for this attraction (located across from Mission to Mars) were nonexistent or short even when the park was crowded. If … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 02/20/08: Simon and Garfunkel – Old Friends

Laura's Blogs Posted on December 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 24, 2012

Time it was, and what a time it was, it was A time of innocence, a time of confidences Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you Old Friends by Paul Simon and Arthur Garfunkel Old friends, Old friends Sat on their park bench Like bookends. A newspaper blown though the grass Falls on the round toes Of the high shoes Of the old friends. Old friends, Winter companions, The old men Lost in their overcoats, … Continue reading →
