Poetry Wednesday 01/14/09: Drawing Hands
Drawing Hands, 1948

MC Escher’s Drawing Hands
by Joel Hensley
Square supports circle
Where hands of lead give mutual life,
Fingers of detail hold pencils,
Towering over fading wrists,
Giving way to cuffs of lines.
Severed hands float above two dimensions,
The yin and yang with nothing between,
Wood pencils on paper, both coming from trees,
The revolution complete.
Death of one gives
Life to another
Allowing itself to
Be created in turn through
N e v e r e n d i n g
Spinning of creation.

Hello, and welcome back again to Poetry Wednesday 01/14/09.
You can sign in today and take the tour thru Thursday, so take your time.
I’ll be your hostess again this week. My sister, Sans Souci, is on a break, putting together her own poetry book, but she will check in.
Before we get started, please make sure that your post has a link to get back to this page to make it easier to take the tour:
1) Copy and paste the following link that I have provided for you from this page to somewhere on your poetry post.
Link back to the Poetry Wednesday tour on Laurita’s page
2) Leave the link of your poetry post in the comments section below. This is the link guests will click on to read your poem (see my post below as an example).
I’m going to start things off this week with a poem by Alfred Lloyd Tennyson called Marianna. The subject of this poem is drawn from a line in Shakespeare’s play, Measure for Measure: “Mariana in the moated grange.” This line describes a young woman waiting for her lover Angelo, who has abandoned her upon the loss of her dowry.
My post for this week is dedicated to my Multiply friend, Loretta, who gave me the idea to do the Tennyson poem when I posted the painting, “Marianna” by the famous British artist, Sir John Everett Millais for Art Sunday.
The tour starts here, with you.

This week I am submitting a couple of interesting poems from a couple of poets who can get a little droll sometimes. The first one is by William Blake … the eternal optimist Mercy, Pity, Peace The second poem is from a poet who seems to be cold natured, in more ways than one … Robert Frost Home Burial
There are also some links on the Blake page to poems on my blog I have added in the past week. Enjoy! |
This is my 1st post. It’s good to meet you all! Jay http://notjay.multiply.com/journal/item/77/Invincible_-_Poem_122808

My entry is up late, but today’s snow day in CT gave me a chance to do the editing I needed and get in some play time. The snow delays and cancellations are making work very hectic to stay caught up and healthy. Here is my link: http://fluffyj.multiply.com/journal/item/322 I’ll pop in send my best to ppiccola first and then I’ll be about catching up. -janeen
