Art Sunday 01/11/09: John William Waterhouse
My Sweet Rose, 1908 Also called, The Soul of a Rose by John William Waterhouse Oil on canvas
John William Waterhouse, known to his family and friends as “Nino”, was born in Rome, Italy in 1849 to English parents, and moved to London at an early age. His father was also an artist, and John followed in his footsteps. Early in his career, Waterhouse established his style. It changed little, but he continually refined it, and he really captured the souls of all his beautiful ladies, with superb skin tones. His combination of mythology, poetry, and mystique femme fatale is absolutely outstanding and soulfully touching. He passed away in 1917.

He is one of my most favorite artists. I have his Mermaid hanging framed (huge) in my master bath and the Lady of Shallot in my window shadow box (also huge) in my bedroom. Also in my room are 4 smaller prints, Reclining and Siren are two of them. I love his work.
