Art Sunday 12/21/08: The Music and Art of Joni Mitchell
When most people remember Joni Mitchell, they remember her music, of course.
She is also a wonderful artist, and has done the artwork for most, if not all her album covers. I was checking out her website, and there are about 250 pieces of artwork that you can browse through. The painting to the right is a georgeous self-portrait, one of many self-portraits that she has done over the years.
Presenting Joni Mitchell: Artist and Musician, both sides now…

This is Joni’s version of the Leighton masterpiece, Flaming June. Notice how the girl is facing the other way in Joni’s painting.
Joni’s painting of 9/11. Notice how the tower is upside down. I guess this is her view of the world.
It’s funny that she thinks of herself as a painter first, and then a songwriter second: “I’m a painter first, and a musician second. I’m really a painter at heart and I can say this now. Music was a hobby for me at art school. Art was always what I was going to do. I have always thought of myself as a painter derailled by circumstance.” Recently, she has been put on a postage stamp honoring her and 3 other Canadian entertainers: Paul Anka, Gordan Lightfoot, and Anne Murray.

Great tribute to one of the most iconic females (in my estimation). I have loved her voice, her songwriting, her artistry for so many years. After having not heard her for awhile, I dragged her albums, CD’s and everything else out and had a “Joni” night while watching snow pummel MI. I am always taken aback every time I hear her, even if it’s an oft-played song. Thank you Laurita, you have a done a great job with this and your entire site. Take Care of yourself during this season, and I’ll be hoping that someday Santa will bring me one of her prints. LOL

What a fine way to start my snow-bound day! Thank-you for an ongoing inspiration of music and information (thumbing my nose at the art teachers who kept saying “focus on one skill”)
