Art Sunday: A Celebration of Judaism in Art

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 28, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

The Feast of the Rejoicing of The Law at the Synagogue in Leghorn, Italy. 1850. Oil on canvas. The Jewish Museum, New York, by Soloman Alexander Hart. Like other 19th century British artists, he traveled, visited Italy, and documented the sites he saw. In this romanticized canvas, he depicts a procession during the celebration of Simhat Torah in the Synagogue at Leghorn, whose lavish interior he observed while traveling through Italy. Simhat Torah, The Procession of The Law.   Soloman Alexander Hart 1806-1881 was a … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 11/28/2012: It’s The Journey That’s Important

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

It’s The Journey That’s Important… By John McLeod Life, sometimes so wearying Is worth its weight in gold The experience of traveling Lends a wisdom that is old Beyond our ‘living memory’ A softly spoken prayer: “It’s the journey that’s important, Not the getting there!” Ins and outs and ups and downs Life’s road meanders aimlessly? Or so it seems, but somehow Leads us where we need to be, And being simply human We oft question and compare…. “Is the journey so important Or the … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday: Late Autumn in Venice by Delmore Schwartz

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

Late Autumn In Venice by Delmore Schwartz The city floats no longer like a bait To hook the nimble darting summer days. The glazed and brittle palaces pulsate and radiate And glitter. Summer’s garden sways, A heap of marionettes hanging down and dangled, Leaves tired, torn, turned upside down and strangled: Until from forest depths, from bony leafless trees A will wakens: the admiral, lolling long at ease, Has been commanded, overnight — suddenly –: In the first dawn, all galleys put to sea! Waking … Continue reading →

The Mellotron

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraDecember 21, 2012

The mellotron was probably the most unique instrument ever developed in the history of music. A more exact description of it would be an electromechanical polyphonic keyboard musical instrument. It was originally developed and built in Birmingham, England in the early 1960s. It was very similar to its ancester called the Chamberlin. It was developed by Harry Chamberlin in 1946. It had a piano- style keyboard. Underneath each key is a small tape deck. Each tape is pre-recorded with various musical instruments or special effects. … Continue reading →

A Cure For The Common Cold

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

Think Zinc ! I did it with COLD-EEZE. Yep. I was putting my son on the school bus one day. One of the other moms that was with me noticed that I had a mean cough that I had for a few weeks. Usually, when I get a cold, I develop first a sore throat for a few days, followed by a couple of sneezes. By then, the sore throat is gone, but then I’m left with a cough that may last for weeks or … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday: If Dogs Run Free

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraJune 15, 2015

If Dogs Run Free by Bob Dylan If dogs run free, then why not we Across the swooping plain ? My ears hear a symphony Of two mules, trains and rain The best is always yet to come That’s what they explain to me Just do your thing, you’ll be king If dogs run free. If dogs run free, why not me Across the swamp of time ? My mind weaves a symphony And tapestry of rhyme Oh, winds which rush my … Continue reading →

Theater Thursday 05/01/08: A Hatful of Rain

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

Steve McQueen made his debut on Broadway in 1955, by replacing Ben Gazzara in the play A Hatful of Rain. This is probably the first time that the issue of drug addiction is handled on stage or screen. In 1951 a young Steve McQueen was contemplating entering ’tile setting school’ (through the assistance provided to him under the GI bill), but his plans took a change of direction when a girl he was dating took him to ‘The Neighbourhood Playhouse’, one of New York’s premier … Continue reading →
