Poetry Wednesday 12/10/09: The Eternal Moment

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

The Eternal Moment by Laurita Our lives are either looking backwards, Or  looking forwards, Where’s the moment? We can’t change the past, And we don’t know what the future will be, All we have is now. Are we humans having a spritual experience? Are we spirits having a human experience? We are just recycled souls, Spiraling upwards, Towards inner bliss.   I wrote this short poem, The Eternal Moment, in honor of my 55th birthday for December 10, 2009. This is the only poem I have ever … Continue reading →

New York drops eye test for driver’s license renewal

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

I know this sounds great, but is it really? Think of all the people on the road that drive who will never get their eyes checked again!  ALBANY, N.Y. — New York is dropping its requirement for vision tests to make  it easier for drivers to renew licenses online or by mail. Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Barbara Fiala said in a statement  Monday that the change is one of several stemming from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s call  for streamlining by state agencies. Another change is … Continue reading →

The Case of the Haunted Car: Mystery Solved

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

My husband got up to go to work at 4 o’clock this morning. He opened the garage door and noticed that the car had all the windows and sunroof open all the way. Nothing was taken. You need to key in a combination to get into the garage. He called the police on the way to work, but they just said to let them know if anything was taken (LoL!). All the other cars parked nearby in the complex either outside or garaged were not effected. My husband … Continue reading →

Gloria Stavers

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

Gloria Stavers was a young fashion model in 1957 when she took a job at 16 Magazine as a subscription clerk. Having enjoyed success as a runway and photographer’s model in the 1950s, she hung out with the New York jet set and was even rumored to have had a “relationship” with Mickey Mantle. But by the late ’50s, health problems stemming from a childhood bout with rheumatic fever and a bad back led Gloria to abandon modeling. At a party, she met Jacques Chambrun … Continue reading →

Mystery Week: Leonard Nimoy hosts “In Search of Ghosts in Photography”

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

In Search of … was a TV documentary series that was broadcast weekly from 1976 to 1982. It was created after two successful hour long TV documentaries, In Search of Ancient Astronauts in 1973 (based on the book Chariots of the Gods), and In Search of Ancient Mysteries in 1975 both with narration by Rod Serling. After the untimely death of Serling, Leonard Nimoy was chosen to be the host of the spin-off series. The series conducted “investigations” into the pseudoscientific and paranormal (e.g.,UFOs, Bigfoot, … Continue reading →

Art Sunday: Mysteries in Art

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

The Mystery in the Mirror Vermeer’s Camera This painting called, ‘Lady at the Virginals with a gentleman”, was created by the great Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer in the 1660s. It shows an exquisitely painted interior scene, with a woman playing a keyboard and a man listening. The woman has her back to us, although we can see a reflection of her face in the mirror on the wall. The man’s role is unclear. He appears to be wearing an outdoor coat, and is carrying a … Continue reading →

Why I prefer vinyl records to c/ds

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

There are millions of people who prefer the sound of vinyl over CD.  In fact, many claim that vinyl stores accurate uncompressed audio, which can easily surpass the quality of CDs when using the right audio equipment.  The recent advent of SACD (Super Audio CD by Sony), and DVDAudio are attempts to decrease the amount of compression that is used to store audio on a standard CD.  Of course, CDs are far more convenient than vinyl.  They are less likely to scratch, more portable, and … Continue reading →

The History Channel: Cities of the Underworld

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraNovember 27, 2012

“Cities of the Underworld” is a DVD series which orignially ran on The History Channel that explores the archeology of the big cities of the world. It is hosted by Eric Geller.  New York is my favorite episode, although most major cities have their own episode. Below there is a video about Hitler’s lost underground prisons.    New York may be the City that Never Sleeps…but it’s not just The Big Apple’s streets that refuse to rest. Here, the underworld is a living, breathing tangle of engineering, history, and … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 08/20/08: Shimmy, Shimmy, Shimmy Like My Sister, Kate

Laura's Blogs Posted on November 27, 2012 by LauraDecember 28, 2012

Nikki Giovanni is one of the best-known and most accomplished African-American authors. A professor of English at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, she speaks frequently around the country. Nikki Giovanni’s last work is a wonderful anthology of poems by the very best African-American writers including Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Gwendolyn Brooks and many others. For Poetry Wednesday this week, I have taken three poems from her compilation, “Shimmy, Shimmy, Shimmy Like My Sister, Kate”.  Juxtaposed with the poems, Giovanni has added her own highly personal responses, sometimes … Continue reading →
