Poetry Wednesday 11/12/08: Graeme Edge

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 25, 2012

Graeme Edge has always been the poet of The Moody Blues. Born on the 30th of March, 1941, in Rochester, Staffs (England), drummer Graeme Edge is best known as the drummer for the Moody Blues, but has also led his own band from time to time, the Graeme Edge Band. Although Edge’s love of boats and the sea almost made him decide on a different career path, he ultimately chose music, playing with local bands on a regular basis. Eventually, Edge received an invite from … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 01/14/09: Mariana

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 28, 2012

Mariana, 1851 by Sir John Everett Millais Oil on canvas The subject of this poem is drawn from a line in Shakespeare’s play Measure for Measure: “Mariana in the moated grange.” This line describes a young woman waiting for her lover Angelo, who has abandoned her upon the loss of her dowry. Just as the epigraph from Shakespeare contains no verb, the poem, too, lacks all action or narrative movement. Instead, the entire poem serves as an extended visual depiction of melancholy isolation.   Mariana … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 04/22/09: The White Dawn

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 28, 2012

Elaine by Herbert Gustav Schmalz (1856-1935) Oil on canvas The White Dawn By Charles Van Lerberghe (1861-1907) (Translated from French) The white dawn says to my dream: “Wake up, the sun is shining.” My soul listens and I raise my eyelids slightly towards it. A ray of light touches the pale flower of my blue eyes. A flame awakens my mouth, a breeze awakens my hair. And my soul, like a rose, trembling slowly all day through, wakes to the beauty of things, as my … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 04/22/09: The Best Thing in the World

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 5, 2012

Choosing, 1864 by George Frederic Watts, (1817 – 1904) Oil on canvas The Best Thing in the World by Elizabeth Barrett Browning What’s the best thing in the world? June-rose, by May-dew impearled; Sweet south-wind, that means no rain; Truth, not cruel to a friend; Pleasure, not in haste to end; Beauty, not self-decked and curled Till its pride is over-plain; Light, that never makes you wink; Memory, that gives no pain; Love, when, so, you’re loved again. What’s the best thing in the world? … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 05/27/09: Let Us Have Faith

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 28, 2012

Let Us Have Faith by Helen Keller (1940) Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable. In 1893, when she was 13, Helen wrote what she described as “a word picture of … Continue reading →

Poetry Wednesday 05/27/09: Ode on Intimations of Immortality

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 2, 2012

They say that no matter how old you get, you never forget your first love. One of my favorite movies growing up was Splendor in the Grass. It was made in 1961. This intriquing play is a tragic, coming-of-age melodrama from Pulizer Prize winning playwright William Inge’s original screenplay. It was Inge’s first story written directly for the screen and he received a nomination (and the film’s sole Oscar) for the best original story and screenplay for his work. The time period for the story … Continue reading →

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 28, 2012

Blues by Jesse Reisch Jazzonia By Langston Hughes Oh, silver tree! Oh, shining rivers of the soul!  In a Harlem cabaret Six long-headed jazzers play. A dancing girl whose eyes are bold Lifts high a dress of silken gold. Oh, singing tree! Oh, shining rivers of the soul! Were Eve’s eyes In the first garden Just a bit too bold? Was Cleopatra gorgeous In a gown of gold? Oh, shining tree! Oh, silver rivers of the soul! In a whirling cabaret Six long-headed jazzers play. … Continue reading →
