CreARTive Sunday 03/16/08: Dichroic Glass

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 6, 2012 by LauraNovember 7, 2012

The amazing brilliance of Dichroic glass is achieved by vaporizing metallic oxide onto glass sheets in a controlled vacuum. Multiple layers of the treated glass create the dazzling colors. The cut and stacked pieces are fused in a kiln, often several times. Further annealing, grinding and firepolishing result in beautiful and unique jewelry.  Also, more layers provide more color depth. Here’s a piece that I got from my mother-in-law: Here’s a couple of pendants I got for my birthday from San Souci:   Dichroic glass jewelry … Continue reading →

Left: The USS New York Original photo by Laurita A commissioning of a ship marks her entry into active Navy service, but The USS New York represents something extra special. It is made with seven and a half tons of steel from the Twin Towers that were bullt into the ship’s bow. The ship was built in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her motto, “Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget,” reminds all of the terrorist attacks that killed so many innocent civilians and the heroic actions of the firefighter, police, and other first … Continue reading →

ART SUNDAY 04/27/08: Through the Eyes of a Muse

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 20, 2012

Layla by Derek and the Dominos (Eric Clapton) Patricia Anne Boyd was a famous 60s model who starred as a schoolgirl in the Beatlemania flick, “A Hard Day’s Night.” She was probably the most famous muse of rock and roll in the 20th century.  The first of six children, she was born in Hampstead, England, but also lived in Kenya. Pattie moved to London in 1962, where she became a successful model. It was on the set of “A Hard Day’s Night” that Pattie first met George Harrison, … Continue reading →

GiGi, The Java Finch

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 1, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

My sister, Sans Souci, and I had a bird that our mom got us. It was a Java Finch that we got at Woolworth’s (yes, Woolworth’s had birds). I don’t remember who named the bird Gigi (we pronouced it as “gee-gee”, like the movie), but it was probably Sans. The above photograph is not of the actual bird we had. I uploaded a picture of one off the internet just to give you an idea of what it looked like. The one we had was … Continue reading →

The Outer Limits

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 1, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

One of my favorite television shows growing up was The Outer Limits. The original series ran from 1963 to 1965. It was similar to the style of The Twilight Zone except that The Outer Limits was more science fiction based. There were about 49 episodes and it ran on ABC. Originally the pilot episode was titled, “Please Stand By”, but it was later rejected by ABC, and it was changed to, “The Outer Limits.” The series was created by Leslie Stevens and Joseph Stepano. Joseph … Continue reading →
