11/7/09: I was invited to witness The USS New York get commissioned

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 5, 2012 by LauraNovember 24, 2012

I have been invited to witness The USS New York, a new Navy ship, get  commissioned on Saturday, November 7 in New York City. I hope to get some good pictures of it. The slideshow above shows the ship arriving into New York harbor on Monday. It is made out of steel from the World Trade Center. . NEW YORK (AP) — The new Navy assault ship USS New York, built with World Trade Center steel, arrived in its namesake city Monday with a 21-gun salute near … Continue reading →

GiGi, The Java Finch

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 1, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

My sister, Sans Souci, and I had a bird that our mom got us. It was a Java Finch that we got at Woolworth’s (yes, Woolworth’s had birds). I don’t remember who named the bird Gigi (we pronouced it as “gee-gee”, like the movie), but it was probably Sans. The above photograph is not of the actual bird we had. I uploaded a picture of one off the internet just to give you an idea of what it looked like. The one we had was … Continue reading →

The Outer Limits

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 1, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

One of my favorite television shows growing up was The Outer Limits. The original series ran from 1963 to 1965. It was similar to the style of The Twilight Zone except that The Outer Limits was more science fiction based. There were about 49 episodes and it ran on ABC. Originally the pilot episode was titled, “Please Stand By”, but it was later rejected by ABC, and it was changed to, “The Outer Limits.” The series was created by Leslie Stevens and Joseph Stepano. Joseph … Continue reading →

Stool Fans

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 1, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

When we were growing up, my sister, Sans Souci and I shared a room in a two bedroom apartment with our parents in Stuyvesant Town (large apartment complex) in N.Y.C. When we lived there in the sixties, there was no air conditioning in Stuyvesant Town at the time. So we just had a lot of fans going in the summer. One particular fan, which was my favorite, was a stool fan. I found that if you’re lying in bed with a sheet over you and … Continue reading →

A Famous Chicago Ghost Story

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 1, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

The Story of Resurrection Mary Aside from harried motorists who encountered Mary along Archer Avenue, one of the first people to ever meet Mary face to face was a young man named Jerry Palus. His experience with Mary took place in 1939 but would leave such an impression that he would never forget it until his death in 1992. Palus remained an unshakable witness and appeared on a number of television shows to discuss his night with Resurrection Mary. Regardless, he had little to gain … Continue reading →

Ghost of the Burned Building

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 1, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

On November 19, 1995, Wem Town Hall in Shropshire, England, an old building built in 1905, was destroyed by fire. Tony O’Rahilly, a local resident, took photos of the spectacle from across the street. One of those photos shows a small, partially transparent girl standing in the doorway. Neither O’Rahilly nor any of the other onlookers or firefighters recalled seeing the girl there. Dr. Vernon Harrison, a photographic expert and former president of the Royal Photographic Society, examined both the print and the original negative, … Continue reading →

The Tulip Staircase Ghost

Laura's Blogs Posted on September 1, 2012 by LauraNovember 28, 2012

Rev. Ralph Hardy, a retired clergyman from White Rock, British Columbia, took this now-famous photograph in 1966. He intended merely to photograph the elegant spiral staircase (known as the “Tulip Staircase”) in the Queen’s House section of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. Upon development, however, the photo revealed a shrouded figure climbing the stairs, seeming to hold the railing with both hands. Experts, including some from Kodak, who examined the original negative concluded that it had not been tampered with. It’s been said … Continue reading →

It Was Seventeen Years Ago Today…

Laura's Blogs Posted on December 10, 1991 by LauraDecember 2, 2012

This picture of Justin Hayward (ladies: click to enlarge, hee, hee!) was taken out of a program booklet when The Moody Blues did two benefit concerts in New York City in 1991 at The Paramount Theater.  I’ve been to so many of their concerts in New York City. This tour was promoting their “Keys Of The Kingdoms” album, which was released earlier that year. Their big hit at this time was, “Say It With Love.”  It was a benefit concert, and after it had finished, the first ten rows … Continue reading →
