CreARTive Sunday 05/03/08: Tiffany Lamps
The Tiffany lamp is a type of lamp with a stained glass shade. The pieces of stained glass that comprise a Tiffany shade are soldered together with copper foil.
Original Tiffany lamps are generally considered part of the Art Nouveau movement, and are considered one of the best American contributions to this movement that began in Europe in the late 19th century.
The first Tiffany lamp was created in 1899 with a bronze base and was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The record price for an original Tiffany Studios lamp at a public sale exceeds US $8,000,000.
Tiffany was inspired by Thomas Edison’s new invention the incandescent filament light bulb.
He was among the first to create a revolution in home illumination using his colored glass to produce beautiful commercial electric lamps.
Effort was made for Tiffany’s artistic products to reach all economic levels sometimes at the sacrifice of company profit.
He introduced his style and left his mark in the U.S. by redecorating a number of private homes and public spaces. Mark Twain, Cornelius Vanderbilt and, the presidential White House are listed among Tiffany’s clients. Most Tiffany lamps were made between 1895 and 1920
This is my favorite Tiffany lamp. I keep it in the bedroom on my dresser. I don’t use it as a reading lamp because it doesn’t really give enough light for reading, but it really is a gorgeous decorative lamp !

They are masterpieces indeed and cost a fortune–hey if that’s areal Tiff better get it off the window before it falls! 😉
I know someone who collects and sells the real stuff, he makes a fortune–he’s a school principal who moonlights as an antiques dealer. You know what brings in more money. I love the dragonfly motif on that big one. Excellent stuff! |

I’d love to get a big blue one, but I really don’t have room for it.

Wow, nemo, I would love to learn to make a stained glass lamp ! Was it hard ?
|
the way i learned was not the old fashion way it is pretty easy you cut out the glass shapes to a pattern then wrap the edges with a foil with glue on the glass side then you just solder the pieces together
http://www.thestorefinder.com/glass/glass_lib_lamp.html there might be a glass shop by you that offers lessons that is were i went 🙂 |
