Poetry Wednesday 08/06/08: Only Breath by Jalaluddin Rumi
My friend, Heidi, posted this poem, “Only Breath” by Jalaluddin Rumi for Poetry Wednesday many months ago. I was very moved and inspired by it, and I would like to repost it and dedicate it to the Poetry Wednesday group.
Jalal-ud-din Rumi is the most popular poet in North America. Nearly every poetically minded person who is anyone quotes him. However, he is not an American. Furthermore, he did not know anything about America when he was alive. He was born Mawlana Jalal-ud-din Mohammed on 30 September, 1207, 285 years before Columbus discovered America.
He was born in Balkh, the thriving and beautiful ancient capital of Bactria, now Afghanistan. Balkh lies about 14 miles due west of the city of the Muslim world whose name means “tomb of the saint,” Mazar-e-Sharif. The particular saint was ‘Ali, son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad.
Only Breath
by Jalaluddin Rumi
Not Christian or Jew or Muslim, not Hindu
Buddhist, Sufi, or Zen. Not any religion
or cultural system. I am not from the East
or the West, not out of the ocean or up
from the ground, not natural or ethereal, not
composed of elements at all. I do not exist,
am not an entity in this world or in the next,
did not descend from Adam and Eve or any
origin story. My place is the placeless, a trace
of the traceless. Neither body or soul.
I belong to the beloved, have seen the two
worlds as one and that one call to and know,
first, last, outer, inner, only that
breath breathing human being.
Only Breath by Jalaluddin Rumi
Thanks, Heidi

Thank you dear friend, for the poem and good wishes. I first read the poem and then let the video take me away to a peaceful place. It made me think that for each breath I inhale and exhale perhaps it has circled the earth at least once after all my years. How many others, plants, animal and beautiful human beings have drawn upon my breath and I of their’s. We are all interconnected.
You have given me a serene place, thank you. |

I’m so glad I was able to help you. Actually, I had not heard of this poet until Heidi posted it one day. I knew you already read my other inspirational blogs and I wanted to post something different. I have not put out anything like this in a long time. I will try to look for more. This poem teaches you that not only are we interconnected, but that our bodies are not all we are. Bev, you need to look deeper and realize we are spirits that have a body, not bodies that have a spirit. I know I tend to forget that myself, and as we age, we need to affirm that. Wisdom grows with age, and it is a gift.

I too follow this line of thinking. I have no Religion to believe in but I do believe in a power beyond our understanding, God, http://billatplay.multiply.com/journal/item/2/Wednesday_Poem

This is a wonderful poem by an exceptionally wise thinker and poet. Great post, nice looking back to what we had as a group. Very appropriate for this time of year.
