The Wave 1896 William Adolphe Bouguereau Oil On Canvas William Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 – August 19, 1905) was a French academic painter. In his own time, Bouguereau was considered to be one of the greatest painters in the world. In 1900, his contemporaries Degas and Monet reportedly named him as most likely to be remembered as the greatest 19th-century French painter by the year 2000, according to chairman Fred Ross of the Art Renewal Center – although with Degas’ famous trenchant wit, and … Continue reading →

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 28, 2012

The Grande Odalisque, 1814 Jean Auguste Ingres The Louvre,Paris,France Oil on canvas Ingres, Jean-Auguste-Dominique (1780-1867), French painter, transposed the theme of the mythological nude, whose long tradition went back to the Renaissance, to an imaginary Orient. This work, his most famous nude, was commissioned by Caroline Murat, Napoleon’s sister and the queen of Naples. Here, Ingres painted a nude with long, sinuous lines bearing little resemblance to anatomical reality, but rendered the details and texture of the fabrics with sharp precision. This work drew fierce … Continue reading →

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was born Mooshie Shagal. Shagal is a dialectal, northeastern Yiddish variant of the surname, “Segal”. He was born in Vitbsk, Russian Empire, the oldest of nine children in a close-knit Jewish family. His father was a herring merchant. Chagall began studying painting in 1906. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1907. This period was difficult for Chagall because Jewish residents at the time could only live in St. Petersburg with a permit, and he was jailed for a brief time. He met … Continue reading →

ART SUNDAY 05/04/08: Tiziano Vicellio Titian

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraNovember 7, 2016

Venus of Urbino, 1538 Tiziano Vicellio Titian Oil on canvas The Venus of Urbino (1538) is an oil painting by the Italian master Titian. It depicts a nude young woman, identified with the goddess Venus, reclining on a couch or bed in the sumptuous surroundings of a Renaissance palace. It hangs in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence. The pose is based on Giorgione’s Sleeping Venus (c. 1510), which also is displayed below, but Titian uses more sensuality in comparison to Giorgione’s sublime remoteness. Devoid … Continue reading →

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 29, 2012

Here’s an architectural sight you don’t see everyday ! I was particularly attacted to the colors of this beautiful structure. Jubilee Synagogue also known as the Jerusalem Synagogue because of its location on Jerusalem Street in Prague, Czech Republic. It was built in 1906, designed by Wilhelm Stiassny and named in honor of the silver Jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. The synagogue is designed in Art Nouveau and Moorish styles. It was lately renovated and still serves religious purposes. The facade and … Continue reading →

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraNovember 7, 2012

What ever happened to Paul McCartney’s first love ? They had a relationship that lasted five years, but finally ended… Jane Asher’s love of cake making began when she started baking as a child, helping her mother, Margaret, in the kitchen. As a young mom herself, she spent hours making novelty cakes in the shape of animals and fairytale characters for her three children. They were so unusual and good that a friend suggested she try to get a book of her designs published. This … Continue reading →

Art Sunday 06/15/08: Five Classic Paintings of Renoir

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 29, 2012

Two Sisters on the Terrace, 1881 Oil on canvas Art Institute of Chicago Renoir is one of my favorite artists from the impressionist era. It was a tough picking out what would be considered his most classic pieces, but these are my favorites. I love his delicate subjects and beautiful colors. It seems that he was always thinking of springtime, whether it was a bouquet of flowers or a beautiful woman. If I recall correctly, Renoir was the first artist that I chose to do … Continue reading →

Art Sunday 06/08/08: Fra Angelico

Laura's Blogs Posted on October 2, 2012 by LauraDecember 29, 2012

Coronation of the Virgin Fra Angelico The Louvre, Paris I discovered the work of Fra Angelico for myself. What I love about his paintings are his choice of colors. I love the blue and peachy shades he uses in his paintings. Most Renaissance paintings have mostly reds and golds, but I love Angelico’s soothing blue shades in his work, and they seem to be in many of his paintings. I love Renaissance art and I find it to be a refreshing way of seeing it. … Continue reading →
