Theater Thursday 03/17/08: The Four Seasons
The Four Seasons is a 1981 romantic comedy film starring Alan Alda, Carol Burnett, Len Cariou, Sandy Dennis, Rita Moreno, Jack Weston and Bess Armstrong. The story revolves around three couples who take vacations together during each of the seasons. After this pattern has been established, Nick (Cariou) leaves his wife Anne (Dennis) for a much younger woman, Ginny (Armstrong). Nick then brings Ginny on the couples’ shared vacations, causing the other two couples to be uncomfortable with the situation. I think this movie is basically sad with some funny moments. It’s considered to be a comedy, but you can’t help but feel sorry for Sandy Dennis, the woman scorned and left behind by both her husband and the friends that they established together over the years. It’s a good study of how divorce not only effects a couple, their children, but also their entire social life, who ultimately may feel pressured to choose between who they want to remain friends with.

I couldn’t decide whether this was meant to be a drama or a comedy, even though there were so many funny moments. I guess it was showing the lighter side of being divorced. If there is one.
